UCLA and the Division of Life Sciences is committed to fostering an inclusive workplace where all individuals can thrive and achieve their full potential. Discrimination, bias, harassment or violence with respect to race, color, national origin, religion, sex, gender, gender expression, gender identity, gender transition status, pregnancy, physical or mental disability, medical condition (cancer-related or genetic characteristics), genetic information (including family medical history), ancestry, marital status, age, sexual orientation, citizenship, or service in the uniformed services, including protected veterans, is prohibited under federal/state law, as well as UC and UCLA Policies.
Below are mechanisms for reporting incidences of discrimination, bias, harassment, or violence. You can report events that you experienced, that you witnessed, or that others reported to you. If you are in a supervisory role (e.g. faculty, graduate student teaching assistant, staff supervisor of others, etc) you have a mandatory reporting requirement.
Reporting Bias/Discrimination/Harassment
There are several offices at UCLA that handle complains of discrimination, bias, harassment and violence depending on the type of violation, and whether the accused is a faculty, staff, or student. Because the distinctions between these offices can be confusing, or because problems experienced by an individual may span these offices, you can contact WeListen@equity.ucla.edu to obtain guidance. You can also report to the EDI Office at: https://equity.ucla.edu/report-an-incident/ and they will direct your claim to the appropriate authority.
Sexual Harassment and Sexual Violence
Issues involving sexual harassment and sexual violence within any part of the UCLA community are handled by the Title IX office. https://www.sexualharassment.ucla.edu
Information on how to make a report is here: https://www.sexualharassment.ucla.edu/making-a-report. All UC employees (faculty, staff, postdocs, GSR, TA’s, etc.) have a mandatory reporting requirement regarding sexual harassment/violence.
As a reminder, all UC employees (faculty, staff, postdocs, GSR, TA’s, etc.) have a mandatory reporting requirement regarding sexual harassment/violence. Because the distinctions between these offices can be confusing, or because problems experienced by an individual may span these offices, you can contact WeListen@equity.ucla.edu. They can provide guidance.
Discrimination Prevention Office (DPO)
DPO handles a wide range of discrimination and bias issues from ethnicity to religion and veteran status, among others. They specifically deal with cases where student, staff, or faculty have been discriminated by faculty. You can file a report by email dpo@equity.ucla.edu, or via weblink on their website https://equity.ucla.edu/about-us/our-teams/civil-rights-office/discrimination-prevention/
Staff Diversity & AA/EEO Office
In cases where discrimination originates from staff, the Staff Diversity & AA/EEO carries out the investigations. https://www.chr.ucla.edu/staff-diversity/filing-an-eeo-complaint
Office of Ombuds Services
A place where members of the UCLA community–students, faculty, staff and administrators–can go for assistance in resolving conflicts, disputes or complaints on an informal basis. In order to afford visitors the greatest freedom in using its services, the Office is independent, neutral and confidential. https://www.ombuds.ucla.edu/
